Tourism

A visit to Shipstern Conservation and Management Area and the North-eastern Biological Corridor of Belize, allows for the discovery of a beautiful region still off the beaten track. Shipstern has traditionally been a magnet for those birders, naturalists and tourists ready to leave the main circuit, and no one has ever been disappointed.

Home to the only dry forests of Belize, the North-East of Belize also boasts an amazing diversity of habitats, from dry and moist forest to mangroves, saline savannahs, marshes and beautiful lagoons. The North-Eastern Biological Corridor offers taller forests, more closely related to the Selva Maya, which are dotted with small and often beautiful lagoons

Thanks to our conservation efforts of the past decades, wildlife is still abundant, although elusive and not always easy to see. Birding on the other hand is often very rewarding. CSFI’s wardens know these forests by heart, and thanks to their monitoring efforts, have great knowledge of local fauna and flora. And they love sharing it !

Conservation

A tour to Shipstern and the Biological Corridor is also a great opportunity to learn about conservation and what it actually means in the field. While on tour, follow CSFI’s warden, who will be glad to explain their daily work, the many challenges they regularly face and foremost their love for nature.

They also love to put you to work when demonstrating on the monitoring of both fauna and forests is done. During the tour and depending on group size, you will be able to overnight at some of the guard posts in the field and join the patrol teams for a night walk: a great opportunity to try and spot some of the elusive nocturnal wildlife

And more

Being ideally located in Northern Belize, we can also cater to tours in other areas, in order to visit some of the finer sites of Belize such as the Crooked Tree Lagoon (an excellent place for birding), or the Mayan site of Lamanai, to be reached after a lively boat tour on the New River.

Another highlight is a visit to the Balacar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, a beautiful park in northern Ambergris Caye, reached by a 45 min boat ride from Sarteneja.

Our facilities

The facilities at Shipstern headquarters have been tremendously improved over the last few years. We offer two lodges with a total of 8 rooms, and can also cater to larger groups in two 12-person dormitories.

Our newly built restaurant comes with a large veranda and a nice dining area. We also have a meeting room for groups wishing to organize a working retreat in a nice and quiet place.

Planning your visit

Whether a short visit or a longer stay, we are proud to be very flexible! We do offer fairly standardized tours, but we can cater for more specific wishes, such as birding stays.

Please send us a message at tourism@csfi…. and we’ll get back to you without delay, and provide you with all the information you need, and craft your ideal tour.
